SUV runs over tot in Pahoa driveway

A 1-year-old Pahoa girl was critically injured Thursday when she was run over by a vehicle in the driveway of a Big Island home.

Police said the incident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. when a 1995 Toyota sport utility vehicle driven by a 35 year-old man reversed from the driveway and ran over the girl.

It is estimated that each week, at least two children are killed and another 50 are hurt in backover accidents. The worst part is that it is often relatives or friends who are behind the wheel.

These type of accidents can easily be prevented with ultrasonic sensors. These are the little round things you see on the bumpers of a lot of vehicles today. Even better is a camera, with a monitor that clips onto your existing mirror, and doubles as a mirror when off. Sometimes the sensors are not always accurate, and is hard to rely on 100% of the time. A rear view camera will provide you visual confirmation of your blind spot behind you, and is a much more reliable source. Check out the difference between the two pics below.

A surprising fact is these pics were taken from a camera mounted not on a truck or SUV, but a regular car. The blind spot of some cars do not differ much from SUVs or trucks. New "cross-over" vehicles with angled backs make it even harder to judge distance.
